Ingredients

For the Marinade
  • 2 tablespoons Olive Oil Can substitute with avocado oil.
  • 1 tablespoon Sesame Oil Essential for true Asian flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Ginger Fresh ginger is a good alternative.
  • 2 tablespoons Soy Sauce Use tamari for a gluten-free option.
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder Fresh garlic can enhance the flavor.
  • 2 tablespoons Rice Vinegar Adds a touch of acidity.
For the Tuna
  • 2 pieces Tuna Steaks Ideally sushi-grade.
For the Coating
  • 3 tablespoons Sesame Seeds Apply lightly to avoid burning.
  • 2 stalks Green Onions For garnish.

Equipment

  • grill or skillet

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a small bowl, whisk together olive oil, sesame oil, ground ginger, soy sauce, garlic powder, and rice vinegar until well combined.
  2. Place the tuna steaks in a shallow dish and pour half of the marinade over them. Flip to coat evenly and refrigerate for at least 20 minutes.
  3. Preheat your grill or skillet to medium-high heat (350-400°F). This is crucial for achieving great grill marks.
  4. Remove the tuna from the marinade, shake off excess, and press sesame seeds onto both sides. Grill for 2-3 minutes per side, basting with reserved marinade.
  5. Use a meat thermometer to check doneness, aiming for 135°F for medium-rare or 145°F for well-done.
  6. Let the tuna rest for 2-3 minutes, garnish with green onions and extra sesame seeds, then serve immediately.
