  • 1 pound ground beef 85% lean recommended
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil skip if using fatty beef
  • 1 medium onion diced, yellow or white preferred
  • 2 cloves garlic minced, fresh garlic adds better flavor
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste canned crushed tomatoes are an alternative
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour essential for thickening
  • 2 cups beef broth preferably homemade or low-sodium
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon paprika seasoning
  • salt to taste
  • pepper to taste
  • 1 cup frozen peas or mixed vegetables optional
For the Dumplings
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour cold flour helps with texture
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder leavening agent
  • 1 teaspoon salt important for flavor
  • 4 tablespoons butter cold, unsalted butter preferred
  • 1 cup milk cold milk for dough consistency

Method
 

Steps
  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, add olive oil and once shimmering, add the ground beef. Cook for 7-8 minutes until browned.
  2. Stir in the diced onion and cook for about 4 minutes until softened. Add minced garlic and sauté for another minute.
  3. Mix in the tomato paste and let it meld for one minute, then sprinkle the flour and mix well before gradually adding beef broth.
  4. Season with thyme, paprika, salt, and pepper. Let the mixture simmer for 8-10 minutes to thicken.
  5. In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt, then cut in butter until crumbly. Slowly add milk until just combined.
  6. Drop spoonfuls of the dumpling dough over the beef mixture and cover the skillet. Reduce heat to low.
  7. Steam the dumplings for 15 minutes with the lid on, then allow to sit for another 5 minutes before serving.
