  • 2 cups Milk or heavy cream for a richer sauce
  • 1.5 cups Gruyere Cheese grated
  • 1 pinch Nutmeg optional
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste
For the Potatoes
  • 3 pounds Potatoes thinly sliced, Yukon Gold or Russet recommended

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).
  2. Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat and sauté the onion for 3-5 minutes until tender.
  3. Add garlic and thyme, stir until fragrant for about 1 minute.
  4. Sprinkle in flour, stirring constantly for about 1 minute to form a roux.
  5. Gradually whisk in milk, cooking until the sauce thickens (about 1-2 minutes).
  6. Stir in grated Gruyere cheese, nutmeg, salt, and pepper until the cheese is melted.
  7. Layer thinly sliced potatoes in a greased baking dish, pouring cheese sauce over each layer.
  8. Finish with remaining cheese sauce, covering the top layer of potatoes completely.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-60 minutes until golden brown and the potatoes are tender.
