Step‑by‑Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Gather your ingredients and have a large skillet or Dutch oven ready.
  2. Melt 2 tablespoons of olive oil and 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced sweet onions and cook for about 20–30 minutes until caramelized.
  3. Pour in ½ cup of white wine, scraping up browned bits. Simmer for 2-3 minutes until slightly reduced.
  4. Stir in 1 cup of beef broth and 1 tablespoon of fresh minced thyme. Simmer for 5 minutes.
  5. Add 16 ounces of gnocchi into the simmering onion mixture. Cook for an additional 5–10 minutes until the gnocchi are tender.
  6. Season with salt and pepper, then transfer the gnocchi and sauce into a greased baking dish.
  7. Layer 8-10 slices of French bread on top and sprinkle 1 to 2 cups of shredded cheese over it.
  8. Bake for 20–25 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
  9. Allow to cool for 5 minutes before serving.
